View MoreComposting Conditions:
PLA bags biodegrade most rapidly in industrial composting facilities. These facilities provide optimal conditions for decomposition, typically maintaining temperatures around 60°C (140°F) and high humidity levels. Under these conditions, microorganisms break down the PLA polymer chains efficiently. Within industrial composting settings, PLA bags can fully biodegrade within approximately 3 to 6 months. The process involves enzymatic breakdown of PLA into simpler compounds like lactic acid, which are then utilized by microorganisms as nutrients.
Home Composting:
In home composting systems, which generally experience lower and more variable temperatures compared to industrial facilities, Disposable Biodegradable PLA Bags biodegrade more slowly. The process typically ranges from 6 months to 2 years, depending on factors such as temperature, moisture content, and presence of adequate microorganisms. Home composting relies on ambient conditions and microbial activity within the compost pile, which may fluctuate seasonally and affect decomposition rates.
Landfill Conditions:
In landfill environments, where oxygen and microbial activity are limited due to the anaerobic conditions and compression of waste, PLA bags do not readily biodegrade. Instead, they can persist for decades or even longer without significant decomposition. Landfills are designed to isolate waste from the surrounding environment, which inhibits the necessary microbial degradation processes that PLA requires to break down.
Marine Environments:
PLA bags also degrade slowly in marine environments. The lower temperatures, reduced oxygen levels, and limited microbial activity in seawater contribute to prolonged degradation times. While PLA is theoretically biodegradable in marine conditions, the process is significantly slower compared to composting environments. Disposable Biodegradable PLA Bags may persist for several years in marine environments, contributing to marine litter unless properly managed and collected.
